Post Natal DepressionHaving a baby can be at the same time wonderful and joyous but also very emotional and stressful at the same time. It is no surprise that with the lack of sleep, general chaos and huge adjustments in the household that often Mothers (and Fathers) report feeling very down, helpless, out of control, stressed and generally emotional. Often this goes away after the first few weeks, but for some new mums this is not the case, they feel as if they are on a downward spiral. Mums are often surprised to find out that at least 1 in 10 women experience Post Natal anxiety or depression. Symptoms can include low motivation, crying, depression, anxiety, guilt, irritability, loneliness, isolation, anger or, panic. Some Mums report not being able to feel love for their baby. Daily tasks can feel overwhelming and our ability to concentrate appears less than before. New mums can feel that they have to "hide" these difficult feelings from their partner, friends or family. If you do feel like this it is really important to let people know how you are feeling, help is out there either from the Health Visitor, GP, other mums/parents or talking with a counsellor. Counselling is really beneficial to women experiencing Post Natal anxiety or depression.it offers the opportunity to talk through difficult thoughts and feelings since the birth of the baby and the changes around personal identity and relationships. Counselling sessions to help with Post Natal anxiety take place in a safe and comfortable room at the Health Hydro, Milton Road, Swindon.
